Tracing Your Roots
The most popular genealogy software for Windows PCs is Family Tree Maker. However, many enthusiasts agree that there are better titles on the market, including Ancestral Quest (available in a US$37.95 Standard Edition or as a downloadable demo). The free program Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is also highly regarded. Indeed, Dave Obee, an internationally recognized expert in the field, names PAF as his program of choice. Obee says he's used it for more than 10 years. He acknowledges that it lacks the fancy forms-printing features and multimedia presentation features of Family Tree Maker, but enjoys its superior organizational capabilities and frequent updates. "It's updated all the time," he notes.
In the shareware category, check out Ages-Family Tree Database (US$35; 50 entries maximum before registration is required) or BirthWrite (US$30). There are also titles for DOS, Palm PDA, Macintosh, DOS and Unix.
One of the most daunting tasks for roots researchers is finding really old records. Fortunately, there are online archives of Census Records for Canada (1901 is the most recent listing -- a source of considerable complaint by researchers), the United States, Australian Colonies, Ireland and the UK and others.
