Networking Solutions

As most office computer users are already well aware, a network allows the sharing of files, printers and other resources. Now that a growing number of people are setting up small offices at home, many of the same issues are applicable there. Indeed, many of us have upgraded over the last few years to a newer computer but, realizing that the old model is worth next to nothing used, have elected to keep it around for less demanding tasks. Thus, the possibility exists to network the machines together to make the best use of the peripherals and resources connected to each. The links here detail some of the issues and possibilities.

In general, we'd advise standardizing as much as possible. While accounting departments will always need different computers than those coveted by graphics personnel, the more variations you have to deal with in an office environment, the more problems you are likely to encounter. Standardizing on the same OS version, and using all the same type of network interface card will greatly ease training and reduce downtime.
