Q: What is the best consumer level on-line photo album software?
A: PowerPoint 2000 has an export-to-web function with fancy transitions. It's really easy to create photo pages with it with the included templates and the transitions look pretty cool. Other than that, you could use Flash to generate even fancier pages, but it would take a lot more work -- I wouldn't really call it "consumer-level." However, you can get a 30-day fully functional version for Mac or Windows at www.macromedia.com and give it a go. There's a 30-day trial version of Adobe LiveMotion at www.adobe.com, which is well-suited for similar tasks, and generates HTML and transitions.
The definitive cool online photo player, however, is from www.play.com. Check out the amazing photo album demos at http://cf.play.com/play/gizmosmega/
The authoring product ships with Gizmos MegaPak and Snappy 4 -- both are Windows-only titles. Gizmos MegaPak is the package I would use if I really wanted to knock my audience's socks off.
