Panda Antivirus Platinum
Nice Bear, But...
Panda Antivirus is a good example of what some people might call too damn much virus protection. But these days, can you be too careful? The program greatly reduced the speed at which files could be renamed, presumably checking to see if this, like other file-writing operations, might be the work of a malicious intruder. At startup time, screens of brightly coloured DOS-mode anti-virus status messages flash by, letting you know that your investment in Panda's product is paying off. It puts no less than three icons in the Windows Taskbar, puts a Panda channel in the Active Desktop Channel Bar and even puts a Panda of the Week picture on the Windows Active Desktop (!). And the thing talks to you.
It's too much for us. Sorry, Panda. Despite a high rating in a recent PC Magazine test, we're going to stick with our recommendation of a nice, non-intrusive anti-virus program such as Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan (which, in our tests, tends to cause more problems than the latest Norton Antivirus product), or, even better, Trend-Micro's innovative, free, and always up to date online virus-checker, HouseCall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/).
